Dartmouth Standardizes on Newbury Networks' Location-based WLAN Applications Campus-wide

BOSTON- April 14, 2003-- Newbury Networks Inc., the first and only supplier of 802.11-based Location-Enabled Network(tm) solutions (LENs), today announced that Dartmouth College has standardized on the use of its LocaleServer software platform and specialized location-based applications campus-wide.

LocaleServer(tm) is the first of its kind application management platform for enabling a new breed of applications that leverage locations and services available to those running on 802.11-based WLANs. While the original implementation at Dartmouth was at Thayer School of Engineering, LocaleServer and its packaged applications are now being deployed campus-wide for a number of purposes, including content and network provisioning.

Dartmouth's Thayer School of Engineering is currently using Newbury's Digital Docent(tm) application for content provisioning, e.g. to "push" class notes, course information and other relevant materials to students in classrooms using 802.11b supported handheld or notebook computers - based on their location. For example, Digital Docent ensures that only students in that particular classroom receive this timely, location-aware information.

"Our curriculum is based upon the highest standards for learning excellence and innovation," said Edmond Cooley, professor of engineering and director of information technology, Thayer School of Engineering. "With Newbury's location-based applications in use throughout our lecture halls and buildings, we're taking advantage of emerging technology to enhance the creative thought process for our students and faculty."

"Dartmouth has long been viewed as a technology leader in higher education, especially with its large, campus-wide 802.11 wireless network deployments," said Michael Maggio, president and CEO, Newbury Networks. "This is yet another proof point that Newbury's location-based solutions can scale to meet the needs of a diverse set of users whether it's in a educational campus or enterprise setting."

Following the Thayer School implementation, Dartmouth is next rolling out location-enabled networks in some of its libraries and the prestigious Tuck School of Business. As part of a campus-wide rollout over the next several months, Dartmouth expects to use Newbury's HotSpot Manager(tm) application for location-based network provisioning. It will be used in classrooms to ensure students have access only to specific content pertinent to that class. This enables professors and teaching assistants to restrict students from email, instant messaging, and Web surfing, for example, so they remain better focused and productive in class. In addition, Dartmouth is investigating the use of Newbury's location-enabled network solutions to address in-campus e911 emergency services.

"We've invested heavily in building out our campus-wide 802.11 wireless LAN infrastructure to create a productive, always-connected community," said Brad Noblet, Director of Network Services, Dartmouth. "Newbury's location-enabled network solutions help us bolster this wireless community to enhance the learning experience and foster a more productive, educational setting for our student body and faculty."

Newbury Networks has already implemented its location-enabled network solutions in some of the world's most prestigious colleges and universities. These educational institutions are using Newbury's solutions to enhance their existing WLAN deployments as well as improve student and faculty productivity on campus.

LocaleServer provides the following unique application and network functionality and benefits:

  • Content and Network Provisioning- LocaleServer pushes or provisions Web-based content based on a user's location while also providing the network manager or system administrator the ability to manage network access and usage based on location. For example, an organization could provide general Internet access to its guests in the common areas of the office (reception area, lobby, meeting rooms, etc.). LocaleServer also includes usage management capabilities for "turning off" specific locations, performing troubleshooting, etc. It also allows the IT professional to deliver proximity access to the closest peripherals such as a printer, fax machine, projector, etc.
  • WLAN Security with Location Tracking and Monitoring- LocaleServer, through its WiFi Watchdog(tm) application provide the industry's first and only location-based WLAN security and intrusion detection solutions. WiFi Watchdog delivers live monitoring of 802.11 traffic, rogue access point detection, and useful analysis and reporting features to immediately track down unauthorized users and devices -- all by location.
  • Logging and Analysis -LocaleServer delivers valuable logging information such as property usage, network traffic, usage patterns and network activity. This information becomes critical for determining optimal placement of access points and identifying patterns that ultimately help the network run with greater efficiency and performance. LocaleServer also tracks all 802.11-enabled devices or equipment.
