BOSTON– November 6, 2006 – Newbury Networks Inc., the Location Systems Company™, today introduced the Newbury Location Appliance™, the industry’s first infrastructure-agnostic wireless location appliance. The Newbury Location Appliance provides accurate and precise location tracking for thousands of devices over a wireless LAN (WLAN) and enables a host of mobile enterprise applications such as asset tracking, network provisioning, voice and security. Leveraging Newbury’s patented location technology (U.S. Patent #6,674,403), the Newbury Location Appliance is designed to utilize industry standard application protocols to run over a wide-range of WLAN infrastructures including 3Com, Aruba, Cisco, Nortel, Symbol and Trapeze.
Increasingly, organizations in data intensive industries such as financial services, health care and manufacturing are deploying sophisticated WLANs to support up and coming mobile applications and next-generation wireless services, including Fixed to Mobile (F2M) convergence and Voice over Wi-Fi. As these organizations evolve their WLAN strategies, they are embracing the strategic business value that presence and accurate location awareness brings to wireless applications such as asset tracking, security, voice and content provisioning.
Providing breakthrough levels of accuracy and precision for locating 802.11 devices including access points, laptops with mini-PCI adapters, USB adapters, PC-card adapters, PDAs, Wi-Fi phones and asset tags, Newbury is exposing its patented location capabilities to power a suite of custom and 3rd party location applications as well as all of Newbury’s current software applications.
“Newbury started as a pioneer in the location-based wireless networking space,” said Michael Maggio, president and CEO of Newbury Networks, Inc. “In the five years since we delivered our first location application for content delivery, we have honed our location capabilities, amassing the hands-on experience and practical insight required to lead the next wave of location-based wireless LAN deployments. Now, with the Newbury Location Appliance, organizations and mobile application developers no longer have to settle for less than satisfactory results and limited wireless network infrastructure support. They can plug-in a best of breed solution that is designed to operate in diverse environments while delivering on the promise of wireless mobility.”
The Newbury Location Appliance is a network device that is built on Newbury’s mature software platform that has been field-proven in customer production deployments since 2001. With more than five years of enhancements and product releases, the Newbury location technology is deployed across every one of Newbury’s diverse enterprise and public sector customers. Additionally, the Newbury Location Appliance is used in conjunction with the company’s enterprise-targeted location software applications - Active Asset (Real-Time Asset Tracking), WiFi Watchdog (RF Firewall) and Digital Docent (Content Provisioning). Newbury also markets a location application development toolkit, the Newbury Presence Platform™, which builds upon the Newbury Location Appliance, providing application developers with essential software building blocks for assembling custom location applications.
“Rapidly identifying the precise, physical location of our medical personnel, patients and assets such as cardiology equipment, wheelchairs and crash/emergency carts are vital to our critical-care needs,” said Martin van der Meer, information advisor at MCA, one of the largest general hospitals in The Netherlands. “Newbury’s location and asset tracking solutions have helped us improve our overall patient care and cost-reduction programs.”
“This alternative to the Cisco 2710 Wireless Location Appliance builds upon Newbury’s existing expertise in the space and will help drive deployment of location-aware applications,” said Jean Kaplan, research analyst with IDC’s Enterprise Networks Group.
